The Lower esophageal sphincter, also known as the LES is the gate or the passageway of the food from our esophagus to the stomach. The LES prevents the food from going back to the esophagus. When the LES is weakened, it cannot stop the food from going back up to the esophagus and this is called a reflux. The stomach acid damage the esophagus, this is called Gastroesophageal reflux disease. Gastroesophageal disease is a condition than can be caused or triggered by many things.

The food that we eat and the drinks that we drink can cause acid reflux, this is by weakening the LES. These are the food: fatty, fried and spicy food, acid rich food, caffeine rich drinks, alcohol, mint flavored gums and etc.

When a woman is pregnant, her body produces elevated progestin hormones, and these hormones pressure the LES to go down, this leads to pressure the growing uterus.

When our stomach take too long to empty its contents, then naturally the content will go back up to the esophagus, this disorder is called Gasrtoparesis.

The medications that we take can cause acid reflux especially the medications for osteoporosis (women). These medications do not really cause a reflux but it causes irritation in the esophagus. It is really important that the medications that we are going to take be evaluated thoroughly.
